Cold Batik Workshop

Georgia has been rich in textile techniques for centuries. Different technological and artistic methods were developed over the times, including knitting and weaving, felting, needlework, and block printing amongst others. Craft making was the indispensable part of women work; hence they were skilled various techniques from the very childhood. Use of natural dyes for coloring wool, silk and other products was very typical.
The workshop provided by Nino Kvavilashvili will teach the modern painting on silk but using the ancient technique of batik. The art of batik painting traces its roots back to ancient cultures of the East. Starting in Indonesia, it spread widely and became part of the nation cultures of many Asian countries. The colonial era brought it to Europe and it was enriched with different techniques, tools, methods and a range of colors. Batik Painting was brought to Georgia in the 1970s. Georgian artists are now using two methods of batik painting: the traditional one using hot wax and modern, simple one, the so called `cold batik`, using fabric glue mostly for scarves and smaller scale accessories.
During the workshop, the students will study cold batik techniques, produce the scarves or decorative wall-hanging themselves and obtain the final product with self-signature on it.

Duration 4 hours.
One hour break for tea/coffee.
Two-day workshop plan:
Duration 6 hours.
First day: 4 hours of working whith breaks in between.
Second day: 2 hours of finishing art work (wall-hanging/scarf) maximum number of
every attendant will be able to take their own unique piece at home.
To large groups Nino Kvavilashvili is sharing her special technique and experience. More than 10 people can attend her workshop and observe the process of her working on a silk.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS:
We stretch the peace of silk fabric on the frame using stapler. We fix template on the back side of the fabric using pins and copy the same design on the silk using pencil. We pour the special glue into the tube and copy once again the same design with the glue to make borders. This is the first part of the working process.
After the break, when the glue is dry, we cover the surface of fabric with color dyes according to the photo of the work. After paints are dry we remove the peace of silk from the frame. There are two kinds of paints - The paint which can be sixed by ironing and the paint which needs evaporate. In one day workshop we use first option, iron it thoroughly and leave the peace for 24 hours so that the colors will fix on the silk.
In case of two-day workshop we wrap it in the paper, hang it for steaming in a big vessel and leave the silk on fire for two hours.
When the dyes are fixed, we pour the water into the basin, adding a small amount of dish-washer liquid and put the fabric into the basin to soak for 10 min. We rinse thoroughly and hang it to dry. If we like to make the gold paint finishing, we stretch the dried peace back on the frame, and add the decorations with the golden paint.
When the golden paints are dry, we remove the peace of silk from the frame and iron it. Now it’s ready for edging or for stretching on the frame depending what we are planning to make, scarf or wall hanging. We choose the appropriate color of the thread and stitch it around by hand to get finished scarf. We can sign the work using fabric marker.
